How to Dispose of Asbestos Cement

    • 1). Prepare the area that has asbestos cement products. Remove everything from the area. If something is left in the area, it will need to be thrown away. Turn off all heating and cooling systems. Isolate the area and do not let anyone enter it without proper protection.

    • 2). Protect yourself before removing and disposing of asbestos cement. Wear a P1 or P2 respirator, disposable coveralls, safety goggles and disposable gloves.

    • 3). Remove all asbestos cement in the area. Gently spray the asbestos cement with a poly vinyl solution (PVA) or with water. Spraying the cement will lessen the amount of dust created when removing it. Use non-power hand tools to break the cement into pieces; do not use a lot of force. Try not to break the cement into small pieces.

    • 4). Place all the asbestos cement sheets on thick polythene sheeting. The polythene sheeting should be at least 0.2 mm thick. Seal the polythene sheeting by wrapping the plastic around the asbestos cement and taping it with duct tape.

    • 5). Collect any small pieces of cement into a polyethylene bag. The bag should be at least 0.2 mm thick. Fill the bag no more than half full of asbestos cement. Tie the bag without leaving any openings.

    • 6). Label all the wrapped polythene sheeting and the polyethylene bags. Write "caution asbestos" on everything that will be disposed of.

    • 7). Check the Department of Health or the Department of Environmental Protection websites for a list of approved landfills that accept asbestos products. Pick a landfill and call them, informing them that you need to dispose of asbestos cement. Follow the instructions given by the landfill when delivering the asbestos cement.
