- 1). Sand down any uneven areas in the wood, as well as any old chipped paint or stain.
- 2). Vacuum up any dirt or debris. This debris could create a barrier underneath the stain, which will allow water to get underneath the wood and cause damage.
- 3). Stir the stain in the can, then pour it into the paint bucket. Never apply stain directly from the can to the wood.
- 4). Apply the stain to the oak boards with the stain brush. If you are using an oil-based stain, use a soft-bristle brush. Hold the brush like a pencil, and paint the stain on one board at a time, using fluid, smooth strokes. Always go with the grain of the wood to ensure that you do not leave streaks. Wipe any excess stain off with the rag. Allow the stain to dry.
- 5). Apply another coat if desired.
