- Multisection fire dampers are two or more square passageways made of galvanized or stainless steel attached to each other. The dampers have a centered channel of blades, for each square passageway, that opens and closes in response to fire within the ductwork. Damper installation is mandatory for fire-rated walls and floors, according to Metal-Fab Incorporated.
- Bolt the multisection fire damper down with retaining angles, or long metal attachments, within the wall or floor duct opening. Allow spacing between the dampers and the wall or floor for heat expansion. Spacing varies from 1/8 to 2 inches, depending on the type of steel and the width of the damper.
- Multisection fire dampers are commonly used for larger HVAC installations, such as for a business location. Each damper passageway is for a separate duct system, supplying air conditioning or heating to various portions of a large building.
