- Sugar, whether from cane or beet, contains sucrose. This is a complex sugar combining the two simple sugars, glucose and fructose. White sugar is a refined food that offers no additional nutrients; however, your body does not distinguish between simple, complex, refined and "natural" sugars.

Your body metabolizes all sugars equally. Pure maple syrup contains some minerals and trace vitamins, offering more nutrition than sugar alone. Maple-flavored high fructose corn syrup is often sold as a substitute for maple syrup. Corn syrup is no more nutritious than white sugar -- check the label for a pure product.
