How to Get Vinyl Wallpaper off Drywall

    • 1). Cover the floor with dropcloths to prevent spray runoffs from spilling on the floor. Wear gloves, masks, goggles, and protective clothing.

    • 2). Mix the stripper according to the manufacturer's directions. Pour the mix into a compression sprayer.

    • 3). Spray a 4-foot swath of wallpaper with the sprayer. Wait five minutes and spray again. Spray another 4-foot swath of wallpaper. Go back to the first swath and spray again. Spray the second swath a second time.

    • 4). Peel the edge of the wallpaper with a joint knife. Peel the wallpaper. If the paper does not easily peel, spray again until it does. Skim under the wet wallpaper with a wide joint knife to facilitate the peeling process. Gently skim with the joint knife to avoid damaging the drywall surface. After removing the first section of wallpaper, discard immediately to maintain a clean working environment.

    • 5). Soften the next swaths of wallpaper with the sprayer while peeling one section. Spray three to four times to soften thoroughly. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all of the wallpaper is removed.

    • 6). Spray the wall with the stripper, beginning at the starting point. Spray in small sections. Scrub a wet brush in circular motions in the wall to loosen the glue.

    • 7). Soak a rag in warm water, wring it out, and wipe down the wall to remove the rest of the glue. Use downward motions to avoid moving the glue around the wall. Scrub and wipe the entire wall until all the glue is removed. Replace the warm water frequently as it will become saturated with glue.

    • 8). Clean the baseboards with warm water and wipe down with a rag to remove any spills. Let the wall dry for a day or two before redecorating.
