Fabric Softener

• A gentle method of removal for hairspray is liquid fabric softener. Mix 1/2 cup of the liquid with a full cup of water and gently stir together to create the cleaner. Apply to the wall with a clean cotton cloth or spray on with a spray bottle. Use a polishing motion to release the sticky substance from the wall. Wood, tile and most paneling stand up to this method of cleaning. Be cautious with wallpaper or cloth coverings. Paints not suited for washing may be affected poorly by this water-based cleaning.
  
  

Isopropyl Alcohol

• Rubbing alcohol, also known as Isopropyl alcohol, removes hairspray from walls. Use commercial grade, or 70% mixture for the project. Rub onto the affected area using a porous towel or cloth in a circular motion. The alcohol will break down the hairspray, allowing it to be wiped away. Use a damp cloth to rinse off the alcohol after the cleaning process is complete. Use caution with alcohol on paint and wallpaper as it may fade the colors or prints. Apply to a small spot on the wall first to test before applying to a large area.
  
  

Dish Soap

• With a little dish soap, hairspray comes off walls. For a fairly small area, mix a few drops of dish soap into a cup of water. Mist the solution onto the wall with a spray bottle or apply with a paper towel and wipe clean. The same ingredients that remove grease and debris from dishes will break down the sticky hairspray and allow it's removal.
  
  

Baking Soda

• Baking soda, when made into a paste, will remove sticky hairspray from a wall. Make baking soda paste using a water. Add a few drops at a time to a small pile of the baking soda and mix. Rubbing the paste onto the affected area of the wall will rehydrate the dried hairspray and absorb it. Wipe the paste off the wall with a clean cloth. Test the method in an out of the way spot for wall paper.
  
  

Shampoo

• Just as shampoo removes hairspray from hair, it removes it from walls. A few drops of regular shampoo placed in water will strip away the over-spray from aerosol or pump hairspray. Do not over saturate the area while cleaning. Rinse lightly with water. Wallpaper may receive water stains from this method.
