- 1). Remove the pool pump's power plug from the wall outlet or power source near the pool. Loosen the bolts circling the flanged housing of the pool pump with a wrench. Pull the bolts out of the housing and separate the two sections of the pump.
- 2). Twist the pump's impeller off the motor section's shaft. If the impeller does not freely leave the shaft, hold the shaft tightly in place with a wrench while twisting the impeller.
- 3). Slide the pump seal carefully off the motor shaft. If the seal does not slide easily down the shaft, lubricate the shaft with water to help the process. Only use water as the lubricant or damage to the shaft can occur.
- 4). Unpack a replacement pump seal and do not directly touch the front face of the seal. Your skin contains body oils which, when put into direct contact with the seal face, cause the seal to fail and not form a proper seal.
- 5). Slide the replacement seal onto the shaft. Carefully move the seal to the back of the shaft until it is past the impeller's threads.
- 6). Twist the impeller back onto the motor shaft. Connect each section of the pump together with the bolts and wrench. Reconnect the pump's power plug to the wall outlet or power source near the pool.
