- 1). Sweep the floor of the swimming pool to get rid of dirt and other debris before filling it. Due to the rough surface of gunite pools, it's likely that some dirt will be left behind, so get as much as you can and let the filter take care of the rest once the pool is filled.
- 2). Connect one end of a garden hose to an outdoor water spigot. Place the other end of the hose in the bottom of the pool. Twist the spigot knob to start the water flow.
- 3). Keep an eye on the pool's water level. Turn off the water once the water is 3 to 5 inches below the level of the pool deck, or until it reaches the pool's skimmer.
- 4). Test the pH and chemistry levels of the water with a pool test kit. The pH should be between 7.4 and 7.6. Adjust the pH according to the current level and add the necessary chemicals to the water to sanitize. The chemicals and the amount of them depends on the size of the pool, the current water conditions and the type of filter the pool has.
