- 1). Lay your quilt on a large table or floor with the top facing up. At this point, the quilt should be quilted in some manner to the batting and backing.
- 2). Lay the unfolded binding on the edge of the quilt, right side facing down. The binding edge should line up with the edge of the quilt.
- 3). Pin the binding in place along one side. Only do one side at a time when binding a large quilt; otherwise it can be difficult to work with.
- 4). Sew the binding to the quilt on the side you pinned using a 1/4-inch seam. Stop sewing 1/4 inch from the corner. Lift the binding up from the corner and pull it in the opposite direction from the next side. Pull it back over in the direction you are about to sew and lay it on the quilt. This creates a fold in the corner; pin it down.
- 5). Pin the binding along the second edge of the quilt until you reach the next corner. Sew, using a 1/4-inch seam. Repeat the previous steps, sewing down the corners and edges until you get back to where you started.
- 6). Fold the end of the binding under 1/4 inch and sew it down.
- 7). Pull the binding up and over the edge of the quilt. Pin it place on the back of the quilt.
- 8). Thread your needle with several feet of thread. Use what feels comfortable for you; the more thread you have, the fewer times you will have to rethread, but the more it can get twisted and tangled.
- 9). Whip stitch the binding to the back of the quilt. You may have to take a few extra stitches in the corners to help them lay flat and stay secure.
