- 1). Drill two small holes (less than ¼ inch) in your bottom and top handle, one of each end.
- 2). Soak your stakes in warm water for 10 minutes. Soak the handle in hot water for 20-30 minutes.
- 3). Lay seven stakes parallel to each other. They should be spaced between three-eighths and one-half inches apart.
- 4). Weave the bottom handle through these seven stakes, beginning by going over, then under.
- 5). Weave a stake parallel to the bottom handle, this time beginning by going under, then over. Do the same on the opposite side of the bottom handle with another stake. Continue until you have used six stakes. You should have three stakes on either side of the handle.
- 6). Push the stakes together so that there are no gaps.
- 7). Crease each stake and the handle upward at its base (that is, where it exists the woven section). This should be a 90-degree angle.
- 8). Soak several pieces of thin flat reed for 10 minutes in warm water.
- 9). Weave a thin piece around the basket. Begin on the outside of a stake. Allow some overlap.
- 10
Weave another thin piece around the basket, beginning on the inside of the same stake. - 11
Repeat 8 and 9 until there are only 3 inches of stake left unwoven. - 12
Fold each stake down, and weave it into the already woven portion. Do not fold the handle down. - 13
Connect the top and bottom of the handle by pushing the stems of the wooden buttons through the holes. - 14
Put a little wood glue on the ends of the stems, and push the two buttons without stems against these stems. Use a clothespin to hold them in place.
