How to Crochet a Rectangular Bag

    • 1). Cross the free end of yarn over the rest of the yarn 3 inches from the end to form a loop. Bring the long end under and across the loop. With the crochet needle pull the yarn up through the loop to create a smaller loop. Place the smaller loop on the crochet needle. Pull on the short end and long end to tighten.

    • 2). Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through the loop on the hook. You have made one chain (ch) stitch. Repeat this step from the beginning until your chain is 8 inches long.

    • 3). Insert the hook under the top two strands of the second chain from the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the chain. You should now have two loops on the crochet hook.

    • 4). Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through both loops on the crochet hook. You have made your first single crochet (sc). Make a single crochet stitch in every chain stitch. At the end of the row, make one chain stitch and turn the fabric.

    • 5). Insert the hook under the two strands at the top of the last single crochet worked. Make one single crochet in that stitch. Continue making single crochet stitches in each single crochet from the previous row until you reach the end of the row. Make one chain stitch and turn your work. Repeat this step until the fabric is 12 inches long.

    • 6). Crochet short rows to shape the flap of the bag. On the very next row, insert the crochet hook under the top two strands and wrap the yarn around the needle. Pull the yarn through the top two strands and the loop on the hook to create a slip stitch.

    • 7). Make another slip stitch in the next single crochet. Next make one single crochet in each of the previous rows single crochet stitches except the last two in the row. Make one chain stitch and turn your work. Make one single crochet stitch into each of the previous row's single crochet stitches.

    • 8). Repeat Step 5 until the flap is 2 inches long. Cut the yarn from the ball and pull the free end through the loop on the crochet hook to bind off. Pull the free end to tighten, then weave the free end into the stitches.

    • 9). Fold the straight edge at the bottom of the fabric up to the beginning of the short rows. Thread a large eyed sewing needle with yarn. Stitch the edges together on both sides. Turn the bag inside out so that the edges of the seams are inside of the bag.

    • 10

Stitch the hook side of the velcro strip to the underside of the bag's flap. Then sew the eye side of the velcro strip to the corresponding location on the front of the bag. Fold the flap over until the both sides of the velcro strip connect to securely close the bag.
