- 1). Cut away dead or diseased branches using your saw or shears, depending on the thickness of the portion you wish to remove.
- 2). Cut off branches that cross closely over another, or rub up against a branch, to increase air circulation. Make your cuts 1 inch from the collar.
- 3). Prune the tree only to remove dead and injured limbs and not to control its height. You weaken the tree by cutting over tall, healthy sections and make it susceptible for disease.
- 4). Put a thin layer of tree-wound dressing on each cut, as per the product's instructions, to stop Dutch elm disease.
