- 1). Plant the peach tree in a location providing full sun and well-draining soil. Allow enough space around the tree for the mature size.
- 2). Dig a hole double the size and and the same depth as the root ball or container holding the peach tree.
- 3). Cut off any damaged roots using a sharp knife. Loosen any tangled roots and place the peach tree in the center of the hole.
- 4). Backfill the hole and firm the soil with your foot. Water the peach tree thoroughly to saturate the soil and remove any air pockets.
- 5). Cut the peach tree to a height between 24 to 36 inches. Remove all side branches.
- 6). Prune the peach tree as open-center or vase training, which permits light to reach the center of the tree. Remove all branches formed on the tree during the summer, except for three to five well-spaced side branches at least 24 inches above the ground.
