- 1). Measure the distance from the vent's outlet on the top of the furnace to the side of the chimney. Allow for 1/4 inch of pitch per foot. Mark the chimney at the correct location. For example, if the distance is 8 feet between the furnace and the vent pipe and the side of the furnace, the mark needs to be 2 inches higher than the outlet.
- 2). Measure up 2-1/8 inches from the mark and make another mark. This will be the center of the hole.
- 3). Insert the 4-1/4 inch core drill bit into the hammer drill. Drill into the chimney with the center of the bit located on the mark you made in Step 2. Remove the concrete core when you have drilled through the chimney.
- 4). Install the vent piping from the furnace to the chimney. Measure and cut lengths as required with your snips. Fasten the pipe together with sheet-metal screws.
- 5). Insert the last piece into the chimney a few inches deep and caulk around its circumference with high-temperature silicone caulking. Tool the bead with a wet finger to work it in.
- 6). Caulk each additional connection seam with high-temperature silicone caulk and tool each bead in with a wet finger.
