Steam washers combine water and steam to clean clothing. Several companies such as Kenmore, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and Maytag now offer steam washers in their line of washing machines. There are two different methods of producing steam in a washer. One method heats the water in the tub to create steam. The other heats water in a separate compartment and funnels it into the wash tub. Both methods vary slightly but have beneficial cleaning effects.

    Deep Clean

    • Steam penetrates fabric deeply and gently which provides a perfect cleaning environment. As the steam penetrates the fabric, it breaks up dirt for easier stain removal. It also deodorizes by sanitizing bacteria and other odor-causing agents. According to TLC Home, steam washers reduce allergens in clothing. The steam is able to heat up to higher temperatures than boiling water in this pressurized setting. Extreme temperatures sanitize allergens such as dust mites and pet dander.

    Save on Utilities

    • A small amount of water produces a large amount of steam. As a result these machines use less water and it requires less energy to heat less water. Steam washers save money on water and energy bills due to these reductions.

    Refresh Cycle

    • This feature, which refreshes and sanitizes clothes with steam alone, is distinct to steam washers. Refreshing is good for delicate articles which can't be run through a rinse cycle. This also keeps clothes lasting longer because no harsh detergents which wear down cloth fibers are needed for this setting.
