- 1). Turn the disposal over and remove the bottom cover plate. Twist a wire nut onto each of the wires connected to the garbage disposal with the matching wires from the appliance cord. There is a white and black wire on each. Attach the green wire from the appliance cord to the ground screw on the disposal and tighten the screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Reinstall the bottom cover plate.
- 2). Roll plumber's putty into a bead and fit it around the circumference of the underside of the sink flange. Place the sink flange into the sink drain and press it down firmly. From underneath the sink, install the backup ring, fiber gasket and the mounting ring onto the part of the flange sticking through the bottom of the sink. Tighten the mounting screws on the upper ring using a Phillips screwdriver until the ring is pulled tight against the bottom of the sink.
- 3). Attach the disposal to the mounting ring. Ensure that the drain port on the disposal is pointing toward the end of the p-trap under the sink. Twist the lower mounting ring clockwise until the disposal is secured.
- 4). Fit a slip nut onto the end of the p-trap with the threads pointing toward the disposal. Place a gasket in front of the nut with the flanged part pointing toward the disposal. Place the end of the pipe into the discharge port on the garbage disposal and tighten the nut clockwise to secure it. Use a pair of slip-joint pliers to tighten the nut half a turn past hand-tightened. If the end of the p-trap is too long, cut off the excess with a hacksaw.
- 5). Insert the dishwasher drain tube, if there is one, around the disposal's smaller drain port and tighten the clamp at the end of the tube using a standard screwdriver. Turn the screw clockwise to tighten the band. Plug the disposal's cord into the standard electrical outlet under the sink.
