- Shade windows which face the sun with window tinting or reflective colors. Shading windows during the summer helps reduce the load on the central air conditioning unit while lowering your energy bill during the summer. Save more energy and reduce cooling costs by setting the thermostat to a lower setting at before going to bed so the unit doesn't operate all night. Many central air conditioning thermostats are programmable to allow you to set temperatures for various times of the day.
- Replace the Filter once every month. Replacing the filter in the central air conditioning unit with a clean filter each month allows for free air flow between the air handler and the ducts in your home. Use the filter to allow warm air to be forced inside the air handler from the room. Pleated filters, which are designed to be used for more than one month, are not always the best bargain for your money.
- Ask your contractor about service agreements. Service agreements include annual evaluation of the refrigerant, the compressor, the condenser, the thermostat and many more components of your central air conditioning unit. Service agreements, along with the checkpoints covered through the service agreements, can save you the expense of costly repairs to the central air conditioning system in the future.
