Can You Unhook the Ice Maker in a Maytag Fridge?

    Removing the Ice Storage Bin

    • Those who want to remove the ice maker in the refrigerator must first lift and hold the translucent door on the front of the ice maker that covers the ice, then lift the wire arm inside the ice maker to shut off the device. Removing the ice maker involves lifting up the front of the storage bin, then pulling the ice maker out. After removing the bin, you are free to clean it of debris or other buildup.

    Replacing the Ice Storage Bin

    • Hold up the bin parallel to the opening in the freezer from which you removed it. Push the bin all the way back into its place until you hear a click or feel that it is tight. A dispenser that is not pushed all the way back in will not work. Lift the ice maker door and press the wire arm down to restart ice production.

    Dispensing Problems

    • If the ice maker does not properly dispense ice after you reinsert it back into its place, wiggle the ice maker to check if it is firmly in place. Also make sure that the freezer door is fully closed and that the wire arm inside the ice maker is pressed down. If ice has melted around the auger, remove the ice maker again and run hot water onto the auger to melt the ice.

    New Ice

    • The ice that your freezer first produces after you initially install your refrigerator and start the ice maker typically is not as useable as ice that is later created. Maytag recommends that freezer owners discard the first three batches of ice that the ice maker produces, as the taste and odor associated with these first batches may not be pleasant. The freezer requires about 24 hours to produce the first batch of ice.
