Apply a time-release, 18-6-12 granular fertilizer to the soil of small potted 1-gallon cypress trees. Use 2 tsp. and sprinkle it across the top of the soil evenly.

Wait until March after the cypress trees are planted in the ground and measure their heights using a tape measure. Multiply the number by three to arrive at the number of tablespoons of fertilizer to apply for each tree. Sprinkle a time-release, granular 18-6-10 fertilizer evenly under the cypress tree.

Wait until June or July and remeasure the height of the cypress trees. Multiply the new measurement by three and spread that number of tablespoons of fertilizer over the soil under the tree.

Continue this method of fertilization every year, applying the first dose in March and a second dose in June or July based on the height of the cypress tree.
