- 1). Plant beet seeds in a moist, nutritious foundation in early spring to maintain good moisture levels during growth and between waterings. Turn 4 to 5 inches of organic compost into the top 10 inches of natural soil at planting to keep soil loose and nutritious and hold moisture. Add 5-10-10 fertilizer at planting, per manufacturer recommendations, to encourage quick growth. Good foundations make beet growing easier and more successful.
- 2). Water beets with 2 to 3 inches of water every week, and particularly during dry phases, to keep the soil consistently moist. If you notice the soil drying out, increase your waterings to twice-weekly. Maintain these watering standards through the harvest for big, juicy beets.
- 3). Lay 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch over the soil around and between the beet plantings to keep soil moist between waterings. Mulch also restricts weed growth, to restrict competition for water and nutrition. Replenish the mulch layer as it breaks down.
