How to Plant Lespedeza

    • 1). Weed the area thoroughly in mid-spring and work the soil well to break it up. Use a garden roller to firm the soil before planting.

    • 2). Purchase hulled lespedeza seeds or scratch the seed coating to encourage germination. Inoculate the seeds with rhizobial bacteria (available from the seed supplier) following package instructions.

    • 3). Broadcast the seeds onto the growing area, using 8 lb. of seed per acre. Rake 1/2 inch of soil over the seeds.

    • 4). Apply a 0-20-20 fertilizer to the growing bed after sowing, approximately 300 lb. per acre. Fertilize every spring thereafter. Water the bed well after fertilizing.

    • 5). Keep the soil moist, watering as necessary. Use a straw mulch to help retain moisture in dry areas.
