- 1). Choose a short, sturdy curtain rod to use. Use the stud finder to locate the ceiling joist directly over the center of the bed. If you don't find one exactly centered, you can mount the curtain rod with drywall anchors.
- 2). Mount the curtain rod in the ceiling above the center of the headboard of your bed. Also install the curtain tiebacks on either side of the headboard. Put them 48 inches from the floor.
- 3). Measure how much fabric you need to make the canopy with a piece of string or measuring tape. Start at the floor on one side of the bed. Measure to the first tieback and on up to the curtain rod. Continue measuring to the second tieback and back to the floor. Add 24 inches to this measurement to allow for hems and fabric drape.
- 4). Purchase enough lightweight fabric for the canopy. On each end, where the fabric was cut, fold it ? inch to the wrong side of the fabric on each end. Fold 1? inch again to make the hem and sew it in place.
- 5). Turn the selvage edges to the wrong side to form a ?-inch seam. Fold them in again another ?-inch. Sew this hem. Repeat on the other length of the fabric. If you wish, you may skip this step because the selvages don't ravel. Hemming them does give the canopy a more finished look, however.
- 6). Fold the length of canopy material in two, across the width. Sew a straight line 2 inches from the fold.
- 7). Insert the curtain rod into the casing above the bed. Hang the canopy over the bed. Drape the curtain through the tiebacks to create the canopy. Make adjustments to the fabric for proper draping.
