- 1). Choose a vase that fits with the type of style of arrangement you are trying to produce. For example, use a modern vase and sparingly place flowers in the vase to exemplify a contemporary decorating style.
- 2). Decide what type of greenery you want to use. Grasses, evergreens, palm leaves and variegated pittosporum can work to create a canvas for the color of your blossoms. Make either a dramatic statement by using large leaves or place them in as filler.
- 3). Pick out your flowers. If you use flowers in your garden bed, cut them an hour after you water them when their stems are filled with water. Avoid picking out open buds, and damaged, diseased or pest ridden stems by carefully inspecting them.
- 4). Cut your stems at an angle with a pair of bypass shears to help them absorb water. Place them in the case with a package of plant food and a tablespoon of sugar. Set them in the refrigerator for three hours before presenting them.
- 5). Trim your stems and change the water of the vase every other day to prevent murky water.
