- 1). Set the peat pots or cell pack on top of a tray, which catches the excess water that drains from the pots. Fill the pots to within 1/2 inch of the rim with potting mix.
- 2). Sow one to two seeds in each pot or cell. Plant the seeds to a depth that is twice that of their width, then lightly firm the soil over the seed with your fingertips.
- 3). Fill the tray with lukewarm water. Leave the peat pots to sit in the water for up to two hours. The water is absorbed through the bottom holes on the pots and into the soil, where it evenly moistens it without washing out the seeds. Empty the tray once the soil is thoroughly moist, usually within two hours.
- 4). Slide the tray and pots into a plastic bag and seal it shut. The plastic retains moisture in the soil during germination. Set the pots in a 65 to 75 degree F room to germinate. Most seed types sprout in seven to 21 days.
- 5). Remove the plastic bag once sprouts emerge. Move the pots to a warm, sunny windowsill and water the soil in the peat pots from the bottom as necessary to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
