- 1). Work 8-16-16 fertilizer into the planting bed with a shovel or hoe two to three weeks before planting the transplants. Spread the fertilizer at a rate of 2 to 3 lbs. per 100 square feet of garden space.
- 2). Move the transplants outdoors to a shady location a week before planting. Gradually increase the amount of sun they receive each day while decreasing water. This is called hardening, and it helps to prevent transplant shock by allowing the transplants to get used to outdoor conditions gradually.
- 3). Dig a hole with a hand trowel deep enough to accommodate the plant roots.
- 4). Remove the transplant from its container and set it in the hole. Fill in the hole around the transplant with dirt and gently firm up the soil.
- 5). Plant additional transplants 18 inches from the previous plant. Broccoli transplants grow to become large plants, and it is important to maintain this spacing.
- 6). Water the transplants and keep the soil slightly moist until they are established and show signs of growth and vigor.
