- 1). Gently grasp the beetle with tweezers. Observe the insect closely, noting its physical characteristics. Record its exact size, measuring with a ruler or measuring tape, if possible. Record the length and shape of the legs, antennas and body. Identify any marks or distinguishing characteristics, such as spots or lines. Use a magnifying glass, if necessary.
- 2). Record where you found the beetle. Note the plant, vegetation or wood where the beetle was located. Record what food, if any, it was feeding on. Indicate the time of year the beetle was spotted.
- 3). Consult a field guide on insects in Virginia. "The Insects of Virginia," a publication of the Virginia Museum of Natural History, contains pictures and detailed descriptions of the beetles in the commonwealth.
- 4). Contact a cooperative extension office. Virginia Tech and Virginia State University have offices throughout the state. (See References.) Schedule an appointment to take the specimen into an office to have an entomology expert assist you in identifying it.
