- Add a touch of tranquility to your garden with an outdoor fountain.water fountain image by Vanessa van Rensburg from Fotolia.com
There are three main items to consider before installing an outdoor water fountain: size, style and location. Be sure to choose a water feature suitable to the space in both aesthetic and function. A large, heavy fountain may not be the best choice for a third-floor deck space, while a tabletop fountain may be lost in a spacious outdoor entertainment patio. - Before purchasing or building a water fountain, consider the overall impact you want it to have in your space. For a dramatic effect, consider a free-standing, pedestal-style fountain. For a more subtle addition to your garden, a small container fountain or tabletop option may be best. Fountains range in height from just a few inches to several feet. Do not overlook the width of the fountain, either. A tall fountain on the center of your patio may sound appealing, but if the width consumes all of your seating area, neither you nor your guests will be able to enjoy it.
- A fountain can be constructed from nearly any waterproof sculptural object, including rocks, pavers, some varieties of metals and pottery. A fountain has just a few main components: water and a water receptacle, a pump and its hose system and the sculptural piece. Consider the overall design of your landscape, and outdoor space and choose a sculptural component to match. For an organic look, consider natural rock or found stone. Brightly colored pottery works well in an eclectic aesthetic, and elaborate marble structures add a dramatic touch to European-style terraces or patios.
- Consider the volume of sound the fountain will produce and choose a location accordingly. Avoid placing large, noisy fountains in conversation areas. Quiet, contemplative spots in the garden can accommodate a larger fountain for private meditation. Always be sure to consider your power source before installing a fountain. Solar options provide great flexibility, as the panel is portable. Should you choose an electric option, you will need an outlet in a nearby location to provide power.
