How to Cover Water Stains on Cedar Shingles

    • 1). Secure any loose cedar shingles using a hammer and nails.

    • 2). Apply Kilz stain blocker to the water-stained areas using an oil-based paintbrush. Allow the stain blocker to dry for two hours.

    • 3). Wash the oil-based paintbrush with mineral spirits. Wash the brush at three times to ensure that all of the stain blocker has been removed.

    • 4). Apply latex primer to the cedar shingles using a latex paintbrush. Apply it in a vertical motion, moving the brush up and down with the grain of the shingles. Smooth any runs and drips as you work. Allow the primer to dry for two hours.

    • 5). Repeat step four using paint instead of primer.
