Issues regarding sustainability and energy efficiency are sure to be hot topics that will impact future generations. There are also movements that emphasize sustainability ideas for inner-city planning, such as the reclamation of park space, planting public gardens and building green roofs, that have the potential to have a great effect on the urban environment and its inhabitants. Green roofs help control stormwater runoff, conserve energy and provide a natural feeling of aesthetics. Many plants will thrive in a green roof setting. - Allium schoenoprasum is a drought-tolerant plant with a pink blossom during the summer months. It is also self-sowing, which means that if you keep the number of chives planted low at first, it will slowly increase in number. This plant is the tallest of common rooftop botanicals with a height of 15 inches.
- Sedum acre "Aureum" is adapted to cooler weather and has a bright green foliage throughout the winter with a yellow flower during the early summer. This plant has a maximum height of three inches. While this plant is drought-tolerant, it is not suitable for high summer heat. If you live south of the Mason-Dixon line, this plant will not be suitable for your climate.
- Sedum sexangulare is similar in appearance to the sedum acre, but is much more drought tolerant. It has a yellow flower that blossoms in mid-summer and has a height of four inches.
- Delosperma nubigenum "Basutoland" is highly drought tolerant and has a yellow bloom in the early summer. This plant also has the ability to quickly absorb water after dry periods. "Basutoland" grows to a height of three inches.
- Sedum spurium "Fuldaglut" has a red foliage color throughout the year with a pink blossom during early fall. This plant is one of the taller species suitable for rooftop environments with a height of six inches.
- Sedum spurium "Roseum" has a pink flower during mid-summer and grows to a height of six inches. The "Roseum" is also shade- and moisture-tolerant in addition to its ability to tolerate drought conditions.
- Sedum spurium "John Creech" is similar to the "Fuldaglut" or the "Roseum" with its pink blossoms, which flower in late summer. This plant does not grow as tall and normally reaches a height of four inches.
- Sedum spurium "White Form" has a white flower during mid-summer and is well adapted to drought conditions as well as shaded and moist habitats. "White Form" grows to a height of six inches.
- Talinum calycinum has a pink flower during early summer through early fall and grows to a height of 12 inches. It is self-sowing although it will not displace other plants.
- Sedum kamtschaticum has a yellow flower during mid-summer and is noted for its drought tolerance. It naturally grows to a height of six inches and is somewhat taller than other rooftop plants.
- Sedum reflexum is similar in appearance to a blue spruce, but much smaller in size. It has a yellow flower during mid-summer and naturally has a bluish-grey color and grows to a height of four inches.
- Sedum album "Murale" is adapted to cooler weather and produces a brilliant red foliage during the cold or times of stress. The plant has a white flower during early summer and grows to a height of four inches.
