Sealing a Crack in a Shower Base

    • 1). Put on protective clothing, gloves, safety goggles and a dust mask. Grind the area around the crack with a rotary tool and grinding disk attachment to remove all burrs and rough edges. Make the surface as smooth as possible with your grinding disk.

    • 2). Wipe the grinding residue away with a clean brush. Scrub away any remaining grease or dirt with a scrubbing pad and household cleaner. Rinse the area and dry with a towel.

    • 3). Cut several strips of fiberglass to cover the cracked area. Make each strip slightly smaller than the last so the strips can layer into the crack. Cut the strips with scissors for accuracy.

    • 4). Mix the resin with the hardener in your fiberglass repair kit, using the appropriate mixing ratio listed in the instructions. Usually, just a small drop of hardener is required for every ounce of resin.

    • 5). Spread the resin over the cracked area with the stirring stick. Lay the first and largest piece of fiberglass over the crack. Spread more resin over the fiberglass strip and continue to add resin and fiberglass layers, going from large to small to cover the crack.

    • 6). Let the fiberglass dry as indicated in the instructions; this is usually at least 4 to 6 hours. Sand the repair with 100-grit sandpaper and wipe away the sanding dust. Apply a coat of primer paint and let dry. Apply tub epoxy paint over the repair to seal and protect it by spraying the paint over the primed surface.
