Low-slung rattan furniture became popular during and after World War II, when returning soldiers brought home memorbilia and memories of the South Pacific Islands. Later referred to as "Tropical Deco", "Polynesian", or "Hawaiiana", the rattan furniture of the 1940s -- 1960s was sturdy and durable, if stored properly off-season.
