What Flowers Do Well in Full Sun?

    Marigolds

    • The marigold is a flower that does well in full sunlight and comes in African and French varieties. African marigolds are tall, while French marigolds are more compact. Marigolds are easy to grow and can even do well in poor soil. They should be planted in the spring. African marigolds should be planted before French types and spaced 12 to 18 inches apart, while French marigolds should be spaced 6 to 8 inches apart.

    Morning Glories

    • Morning glory flowers grow best in full sunlight and come in a wide variety of shapes, including heart-shaped petals and stars. Its open blooms resemble a trumpet. The morning glory also grows quickly and can climb to heights of 4 to 6 feet tall. When you plant morning glory flowers, do not fertilize them. Make sure they are spaced 12 to 18 inches apart.

    Blue-Eyed Daisies

    • Osteospermums are also known as blue-eyed daisies because they resemble the daisy flower. They are available in a range of colors including white, deep rose, purple and pink. They all have azure blue centers. This flower will only come to full bloom when placed in full sunlight. When potted, osteospermums can grow to a height of 5 inches. If planted in the flower bed, they will grow 12 to 18 inches tall. Osteospermums typically handle drought well, need soil that is well drained. Plant them 10 inches apart.

    Amaranthus

    • Amaranthus have large blooms and are richly colored flowers. They are ideal for adding splashes of color to the garden or acting as a temporary shrub. Amaranthus grow to a maximum height of 3 feet, thrive in dry soil and should be spaced 12 to 18 inches apart.

    Verbena

    • Although they come in a wide range of colors, the verbena is most commonly seen in soft peach and coral shades. They can reach a height of 8 inches and are well suited for garden borders, planters and beds. Verbena must be in full sun to prevent dampening off and will die from mildew if placed in even partial shade. Plant verbena 8 to 10 inches apart.

    Laurentia

    • Laurentia come in two varieties. There are "blue stars" (axillaris) and "white stars" (petrea). They have 1-inch star-shaped petals and can grow to a height of 6 inches. Laurentia should be trimmed regularly to produce more flowers and stay fresh looking. Plant them in full sun, 8 inches apart.
