- The water that flows through a residential water heater contains suspended solids that are invisible to the naked eye. While water sits idle in the tank for extended periods, these solids tend to settle and accumulate at the bottom of the tank. To prevent this sediment from becoming harmful to the operation of the hot water heater, clear the bottom of the tank by draining it monthly. Place a bucket under the drain valve, slowly open the valve and release a few quarts of water. Be sure the valve is completely closed before removing the bucket and emptying it.
- At the top of the GE SmartWater heater, there is a pressure relief valve. The pressure relief valve is an important safety feature designed to prevent an explosion should too much pressure and heat build up in the tank. The valve should be tested annually to ensure it is working properly. Position the discharge line toward an open drain and carefully lift and release the handle to the pressure valve. If working properly, hot water will flow from the discharge line. If the pressure relief valve is not functioning properly, schedule a plumbing contractor to inspect and repair it.
- A water heater's anode rod helps to keep the tank from rusting prematurely. The anode rod is made of metal and is subject to corrosion. Once a year, the anode rod should be removed and inspected. If more than 6 inches of the core wire at either end of the rod is exposed, the rod should be replaced. Exercise extreme caution when removing the anode rod and be sure the cold water valve is turned off before removal. Operating the water heater without the anode rod is detrimental to the integrity of the glass-lined tank, so only remove it for inspection or replacement.
- Special care should be taken to prepare the GE SmartWater water heater for an extended shutdown, such as a vacation or seasonal closing. The tank should be drained if it will be exposed to freezing temperatures. Both the water and electrical supply to the system should be turned off to prevent buildup of hydrogen gas. Before resuming operation of the water heater after a long shutdown, have it inspected by a licensed service provider. Be sure the tank is completely refilled before turning it back on.
- A homeowner can easily perform routine maintenance on a GE SmartWater heater by following instructions, using the proper tools and exercising caution. To extend the life of your appliance, schedule an inspection of the heating element, wiring and controls by a qualified service professional.
