- 1). Clear the planting site of all vegetation.
- 2). Dig a hole equal to the depth and double or triple the width of the yellow birch's root ball. Add just enough water to lightly moisten the soil if it feels dry. Loosen the inside of the planting hole with the shovel if it seems packed.
- 3). Look closely at the roots and clip off those that are damaged, dead or growing in a circle. Place the root ball into the hole and replace the soil. Pat the soil down well with the shovel to remove air pockets.
- 4). Water the soil until it is saturated all the way to the root ball.
- 5). Place a layer of 2 to 4 inches of shredded bark or wood chips around the tree's base, but do not allow the mulch to come into contact with the trunk.
- 6). Water once each week, unless there has been more than 1 inch of rain. Use a garden hose to slowly soak the soil to a depth of 8 to 18 inches. Reduce watering to once every three weeks in late August to prepare the tree for dormancy.
