- The first practical household vacuum cleaner was invented in 1907 and improved by William Hoover in 1908, who added a small high-speed motor. The first robotic vacuum cleaner would appear 80 years later.
- The modern dishwasher was invented in 1913 by the Walker brothers of Philadelphia. A domestic version was introduced in the 1920s, and heating elements were put in them in the 1940s. By the 1970s, dishwashers became common household appliances.
- During the 1930s, the first washing machine to wash, rinse and extract water all-in-one was invented by the Bendix Corp. The first top-loading electric washing machine did not come out until 1947, by the Nineteen Hundred Corp. The 1990s saw the introduction of energy- and water-efficient washers.
- Devices to dry clothes were being developed as early as the 1800s, although it wasn't until the mid to late 1930s that the first powered clothes dryers were being invented. They were powered by gas and electricity.
