DIY Dishwasher Troubleshooting to Repair a Grinding Sound

    • 1). Check for broken glass: Open the dishwasher and inspect for any cracked dishes. Pull out the lower tray and check the bottom of the dishwasher for any glass pieces. Remove any that you find.

    • 2). Disconnect power to the dishwasher by turning off the circuit breaker. Put on a pair of latex gloves. Remove the panel at the bottom of the dishwasher with a screwdriver. Shine a flashlight into the mechanical section of the dishwasher and locate the motor. Refer to the owner's manual for your specific model to pinpoint location. Reach in and turn the fan blades on the exterior of the motor in the event it has gotten stuck. Call a repairman if the blades do not spin freely.

    • 3). Locate the hoses while the cover to the dishwasher is still off. Verify that the hoses are tightly connected to the valves. Inspect the hoses for any kinks and make corrections if a hose is bent. Replace the cover to the lower dishwasher panel and flip the circuit breaker to the dishwasher back to the on position.

    • 4). Locate the spray arm on the bottom of your dishwasher. Inspect for any signs of damage. Verify that nothing is blocking the spray arm. Remove any obstructions.

    • 5). Locate the pump mounted to the motor and connecting into the bottom of the dishwasher beneath the spray arm. Check your dishwasher's user manual for precise location. Inspect the pump for any food or debris that could be clogging it and causing the noise.

    • 6). Consult a repair technician if these troubleshooting procedures don't eliminate your dishwasher's grinding noise.
