Does Zoysia Grow Well in Clay Soil?

    Warning

    • Clay soil does not drain well and remains saturated for an extended time period. Zoysia grass does not tolerate a wet root system. Its deep root system will rot away in clay conditions. Once the deep roots perish, the plant will try to maintain itself using its close-surface roots.

    Yearly Appearance

    • Once zoysia grass becomes established, it offers drought tolerance. The grass also will withstand excessive heat well. During the winter months the grass goes dormant and turns a brownish color. Once spring arrives, the lawn immediately begins to green and grow.

    Planting Location

    • Plant zoysia grass where it will receive six to eight hours of sunlight per day. The grass prefers a planting location with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. Once established, the lawn should be mowed to a height of 2 inches.
