- 1). Cut the dahlia foliage back after the first killing frost in your area. Cut the foliage to 2 to 4 inches above the ground.
- 2). Dig up the dahlia tubers with the spade. Dig about a foot away from the stem of each plant to avoid breaking any of the roots.
- 3). Lift the dahlia tubers out of the soil and inspect the roots. Cut off any brown or black roots from the tubers with the knife. Cut the roots off at the base of the tuber.
- 4). Place the tubers in a box filled with sand. Place the box in a cool, dry area with a temperature of about 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 5). Check the tubers every few weeks throughout the winter. If they develop any diseased parts that turn black or dark, cut them off with the knife.
