How to Size Bath Fans

    • 1). Calculate the volume of the bathroom by multiplying the length times the width times the height. For example, if your bathroom is 13 feet long, 11 feet wide and 8 feet high, your volume would be 1,144 cubic feet.

    • 2). Divide the volume by 60. For example, 1,144 divided by 60 would be about 19.07.

    • 3). Multiply the number found in Step 2 by the number of times per hour you want your barthroom's air to be changed. The Home Ventilation Institute advises 8 changes per hour. Continuing the example, 19.07 times 8 is about 152.6, so you would need a fan with a capacity of at least 153 cubic feet per minute for your bathroom.
