How to Make a School Robe

    • 1). Measure the height of the person for whom the robe is intended by running the measuring tape from the shoulder to the ankle. Cut a rectangle from the fabric that is double the measured dimension and fold in half.

    • 2). Instruct the person to lie down on the piece of fabric intended to be used for the robe. Be sure the fold in the fabric is at the person's neck. His arms should be spread out away from the body, and the feet should be spread about 18 inches from each other. Use seamstress chalk to mark the outline of the robe, keeping the marked line a minimum of five inches from the body at all times. Measure sleeve markings to be sure lengths are even.

    • 3). Cut out the robe, making sure to go through both layers. Turn the fabric inside out and stitch across the cut lines to close the sleeves and robe sides. Find the center of the robe using your measuring tape, and draw a line from the neck to the base of the robe. Cut straight down the line to create the robe opening. Across the fold, cut 5 inches to the left and right of the robe opening to create the neck opening.

    • 4). Press the unhemmed ends of the sleeve, robe opening, neckline and bottom of the robe. Fold the fabric back approximately 1 inch in these locations, and pin in place.

    • 5). Stitch the hems in place and remove straight pins. Turn the robe right-side-out and iron before wearing. Add a school emblem or patch if desired, or embroider the school name over the left chest.
