- A Carolina valance is one option for French doors because of its narrow size and scalloped rim. Purchase a Carolina valance for each door to cover the top of the glass panes. For a Carolina valance with additional length and visual appeal, select a valance that has tasseled trim or beaded trim. Purchase blackout lining for reduced sun exposure. Install a magnetic curtain rod just above the panes in your French door, so you don't have to drill into it.
- Install a strap-tie door panel valance if you want a French country or a cottage design for your French door. A strap-tie panel has several folds of material that are secured at the top of the valance with wide fabric straps. Most of these window treatments have a hook and loop fastener that allows you to quickly and securely hold the folded fabric in place above the top of the French door. This design resembles a flat accordian.
- Add a swag to your French door design if you want a valance that hangs down your door and adds casual comfort to your room. A swag is designed to cover the edge of the door, leaving most of the door exposed. Wrap the swag loosely around the curtain rod and allow the fabric to flow downward. Purchase a 15- to 22-inch swag if you only want your valance to cover the top portion of the door. Install a longer swag if you want the material to drape down the side of the door. Avoid swags that are so long that they interfere with the door handles or the operation of the door.
- If you want a simple valance over your French doors, opt for a stationary balloon valance. A balloon valance has a fluffy appearance and is installed like a regular curtain on a curtain rod. Most balloon valances have a scalloped edge that adds a design element to French doors. Install one long valance completely over the top of your French doors for a unified look, or install a smaller balloon valance on each door. Use a regular wall-mounted curtain rod for the first option, and a magnetic curtain rod for the second.
