How to Install Ceramic Tiles at the Doorway

    • 1). Measure the space between the two walls or two door jams. Find the center point and mark it on the threshold. Set a floor tile so that its center point is over the mark on the threshold.

    • 2). Lay out the rest of the tiles on either side of the first tile, allowing spaces between each for grout lines. Put two spacers between tiles to evenly space them.

    • 3). Trace around one of the tiles on a sheet of corrugated cardboard. Cut out the cardboard. Place the tile back on the cardboard and push both against the door jam. This tells you the height at which the door jams will have to be cut off so the final outside tiles can fit under them. Cut the jams with a hand saw. Remove the cut pieces and slide tiles under the jams. The added space created by the cardboard will be taken up by the mortar used to set the tile.

    • 4). Measure and mark the tiles that will have to be cut to fit, including under the door jams. Cut and fit the tiles.

    • 5). Trowel on mortar, rake grooves through it with the notched edge and set the tiles that were initially dry fitted in place.
