- 1). Open the window as high as it will go and remove any damaged or old weatherstripping from the window with your hands. The weatherstripping may need to be pulled out from the sash channel with a pry bar. Do not close the window.
- 2). Mix 3 tbsp. liquid dish soap and 3 cups water.
- 3). Soak a soft cloth with the dish soap mixture. Wring out the cloth until it is damp, not soaking wet.
- 4). Wash the area where the previous weatherstripping was held with the cloth. This will help remove any impurities or paint chips from the area that will hamper the installation process.
- 5). Measure the sash height. Add two inches to this number to configure the correct length to cut the replacement weatherstripping.
- 6). Cut the material that is being utilized to this length. Self adhesive stripping and felt stripping can be cut with a utility knife. Spring style stripping will need to be cut with tin snips.
- 7). Install the weatherstripping by sliding the trimmed piece into the sash channel on each side of the window. Remove the backing from self adhesive and felt strips. Spring style strips will need to be nailed into place.
- 8). Measure the horizontal sash at the bottom of the window. Cut a separate piece of stripping to fit this length.
- 9). Place the piece of weatherstripping into the horizontal sash channel and attach it in the same fashion as the above pieces.
