How to Live With Chronic Heartburn

    • 1). See your doctor. Your doctor will need to evaluate your chronic heartburn before he can recommend a treatment plan. He might recommend medical tests such as a barium X-ray or endoscopy to determine the extent of your heartburn.

    • 2). Try antacids. Over-the-counter liquid or tablet antacids can be effective in relieving chronic heartburn. Ask your doctor if an over-the-counter antacid is appropriate for your condition. Always read the label, and only take the recommended dosage.

    • 3). Ask about prescription heartburn medication. Your doctor can prescribe medications to relieve your heartburn. These medications not only alleviate the symptoms, but also can help heal the tissue damage caused by the stomach acid.

    • 4). Eat right. Certain foods and drinks can worsen chronic heartburn. Avoid coffee, tea, chocolate, spicy foods, peppermint, acidic foods and alcohol. Drinking plenty of water can help alleviate the burning sensation, because it dilutes the acidic contents and makes them less irritating.

    • 5). Elevate the head of your bed 6 inches with phone books or blocks. This will keep your upper body in an upright position when you sleep, discouraging stomach acid from backing up into your esophagus.
