- 1). Find pictures of the Afghan hound that you can use as reference pictures. Breeder magazines or books are a logical place to start your search. Choose a picture that shows off the dog's whole body; these capture the slope of his back and the length of his coat.
- 2). Photocopy the picture if it doesn't measure at least 10-by-12 inches. A larger size allows you to see the details better. Your printer can enlarge the picture.
- 3). Draw a grid on the photocopy of the Afghan dog. Make 1-inch squares all over the picture.
- 4). Prepare your drawing paper by drawing a grid with the same measurements as the one on your dog picture. Draw the same number of squares also. Use a pencil to draw the lines.
- 5). Look until you find the top of the dog's head. Identify the grid square that holds the majority of the head in it. For instance, the Afghan dog's head is four squares from the top and seven squares from the right-hand side.
- 6). Count the squares on your drawing paper until you find the same square.
- 7). Study the Afghan dog's head within the grid square. Observe how the lines curve to create the impression of her head. Notice the angles at which the lines of the head intersect the lines of the square.
- 8). Draw a line drawing of the square with the Afghan dog's head. Sketch the lines as you see them in the grid square in the reference photo. The more accurately you can draw the lines and the way they curve, the more accurate your line drawing will be.
- 9). Fill in the rest of the drawing of the Afghan Hound. Use the grid in the same way that you did to draw the dog's head. Spend extra time capture the almost squiggly curl of the dog's tail, the length of the hair and the curve of the back. Details like these create realism in your drawing.

Erase the pencil lines of the grid around the Afghan dog. - 11
Shade the dog using the side of your drawing pencil's lead. Lay your pencil down so it's almost flat and move your hand in back and forth motions. Look back at your reference picture often, taking note of the patterns of light and dark on the dog's body. Pay special attention to how these lights and darks create the illusion of the dog's fur. Draw these patterns as you see them on the dog.
