- 1). Inspect the head of the bolt using a magnifying glass and flashlight if necessary. Make note of all markings on the bolt head.
- 2). Compare the markings on the bolt head with a bolt manufacturer's identification sheet. Information sheets are available at most retailers where bolts are sold.
- 3). Determine whether the bolt head markings read "F593U;" if so, the bolt is a 17-4 PH annealed and age-hardened steel bolt.
- 4). Determine whether the bolt head markings read "B8M;" if so, the bolt is composed of solution-treated 316-316L stainless steel.
- 5). Retain the manufacturer's identification sheet for future reference.
