How do I Tell the Difference Between 17-4 & 316 Stainless Steel Bolts by Marking Numbers?

    • 1). Inspect the head of the bolt using a magnifying glass and flashlight if necessary. Make note of all markings on the bolt head.

    • 2). Compare the markings on the bolt head with a bolt manufacturer's identification sheet. Information sheets are available at most retailers where bolts are sold.

    • 3). Determine whether the bolt head markings read "F593U;" if so, the bolt is a 17-4 PH annealed and age-hardened steel bolt.

    • 4). Determine whether the bolt head markings read "B8M;" if so, the bolt is composed of solution-treated 316-316L stainless steel.

    • 5). Retain the manufacturer's identification sheet for future reference.
