How to Power Wash a Deck and Remove Algae

    • 1). Hold the power washer 18 inches away from the deck while spraying evenly. Give the decking a thorough initial wash to remove surface dirt, debris and algae.

    • 2). Mix an oxygen bleach or bleach-type deck cleaner in a garden sprayer. Follow the provided directions on the cleaner for specific mixing instructions.

    • 3). Apply the bleach cleaner evenly to the deck with the garden sprayer. Let the cleaner sit for 10 minutes after application.

    • 4). Rinse the decking with the power washer, keeping it 18 inches away from the wood and spraying evenly. Hold the power washer wand 4 to 6 inches away from board gaps, and spray in between the gaps to remove algae between deck boards.

    • 5). Rinse the deck up to three times to adequately remove all algae.
