- 1). Install gutter screens onto the gutters. These guards are constructed from metal and plastic and are covered with a series of holes that will allow rain to enter the gutter but prevent any leaves from clogging it up. The size of the openings on the gutter guards varies by manufacturers. Some of the guards are sophisticated enough to keep small pieces of debris, such as pine needles, from entering the gutters.
- 2). Install gutter shields or caps onto the gutter system. These are placed onto the top of the gutters and allow water to flow, but pushes any debris, including leaves, off to the side and out of the gutters.
- 3). Clean any leaves that have fallen off the trees and landed onto the roof with a broom or roof rake. This will help prevent any leaves from being pushed inside of the gutters during the next rain fall.
- 4). Prune any trees branches that are hanging over or are near the gutters.
