Making a Bathroom Tile-Top Vanity

    • 1). Cut a 2 by 4 board into small 2 inch blocks with a miter saw. Apply wood glue to the blocks and screw them into place inside the vanity. Make sure to attach the blocks in a place that will not be visible from the outside.

    • 2). Measure the top of the bathroom vanity. Transfer the measurements to the 3/4-inch sheet of plywood. Add 1 inch to each side of the sink that will overhang. Cut the plywood sheet to the right size with a circular saw. Once it is the right size, screw the plywood into the blocks on the inside of the cabinet.

    • 3). Staple tar paper to the top of the plywood base with a staple gun. The tar paper will act as waterproofing should any water get through the tile and the cement backer board.

    • 4). Measure and cut out 1/4-inch cement backer board to fit on top of the tar paper. You should be able to use the same measurements that you used for the plywood base. Screw the backer board into place with a screwdriver and exterior grade screws.

    • 5). Trace the template of the sink onto the top of the cement backer board. Drill a small hole somewhere in the board and then use a jig saw to cut out the rest of the sink template.

    • 6). Dry fit the tiles on top of the cement backer board. Place tile spacers between each tile. Adjust the tiles on top of the backer board until you find a layout that looks good and minimizes cuts to the tiles. Mark the backer board so you know where to begin laying tiles. Remove the tiles and spacers.

    • 7). Spread thin set mortar on the backer board with a notched trowel. Place the tiles on top of the mortar until you have covered the entire vanity top. A diamond blade tile saw can be used to cut the tiles to size where necessary. Wait for the mortar to dry overnight.

    • 8). Grout the vanity top with grout and a rubber grout float. Once the entire vanity top has been grouted, use a grout sponge to remove excess grout from the vanity top. Let the grout dry completely.

    • 9). Install the sink and faucet per manufacturer directions.
