- 1). Take the Coleman lantern fuel can and open it. Look on the bottom side of the lantern and find the filler cap. Remove the filler cap and use a small funnel to fill the lantern 2/3 full of fuel. Always use the Coleman brand of fuel for their lanterns.
- 2). Find the small pump plunger on the lantern above the fuel cell. This mechanism will provide an even pressurized level of fuel for the light. Turn the button slightly to unlock the plunger. This will allow fuel to get into the system; you will need to pump 20 to 30 times to get it flowing. There is a small hole on the plunger -- use your thumb to cover it so the pressure will build.
- 3). Open the fuel valve slowly and listen for a light swoosh or airing sound. There will be another sound similar to water flowing. This is the actual fuel going to the mantles inside the lantern.
- 4). Put the safety glasses on. Ignite a flame on the lighter and place it near the mantles and slowly open the fuel valve. Take extra precaution at this point because there can be some fumes that have built up and that may cause a flash flame. Once the mantles begin to catch fire and glow brighter, begin to fully open the fuel valve.
- 5). Take the plunger once again and give it another 20 to 30 more pumps into the lantern. You will notice the mantles growing brighter at this time. Once you have completed this task, lock the plunger in place and adjust the fuel valve to determine the brightness you want from the lantern.
